Spring Largemouth from Kansas farm ponds with clear water are easy. Get there early in the morning (just after sunrise) and fish topwater. I have the best luck with my Bill Dance Spit'n Image jerkbait or my Heddon Zara Spook (4"). Poppers, buzzbaits, and plastic worms can also be used, but with a little less luck. As the sun comes up, I aim a little deeper. I fish about 2-5 feet down using a modified Texas Rig with bright colored plastic worms (chartruese or white). The Texas rig is modified in that I do not use any weight. Using weight causes the bait to sink faster (duh), and therefore requires a faster retrieve. I like to use a slow retrieve and a lot of jerking with the rod tip. This causes the plastic worm to whip about in the water without actually moving very far. More time in the strike zone means more strikes! Go home and rest during the heat of the day, and come back about 2-3 hours before sunset. Use the plastic worm technique until the sun is just below the horizon, then switch to poppers. Farm pond bass absolutely love poppers in the dusk.

Happy Fishing!
