went fishing yesterday at newton lake and got there at about 8 am and the water was 54 at warm water ramp and 72 all the way up hotwater arm near the buoys as far north as you can go. headed straight north first thing and caught 1 about 16 on a lipless bait two about 17 and a half on a skeet reese double buzzbait in yellow and white, and my partner caught 4 on a eakins finesse jig trailered with a baby guido bug. weren't biting the greatest and had a few guys tell me it was slow everywhere else they were on the hotwater arm and they told us it was just too cold to even bother with the coldwater arm. well we went to the coldwater arm and it was anywhere from 46-50 degrees depending on whether you were in calm areas or windy areas. we caught fish all day from then on on shallow diving crankbaits and spinnerbaits. we caught 4 keepers and one was 5 14 and another was 6 6. the strange thing about the 6 6 was she was caught in 49 degree water and she was full of eggs and her tail was half gone and bloody and she was caught in less than 2 foot of water surely not thinking about bedding down in that temp.??? another thing right before we left in the evening went back to hot water arm and fished the back of a cove in 2-5 foot of water out of the wind and the shad were just going crazy in 57 degree water and all of a sudden bass started busting them had one on with a sammy and she came off and had another bust and missed it and then they were gone. and to me as much as i fish that lake that is a good sign of prespawn in my opinion to see them busting the backs of the coves. like i said there were only a few fish busting but not all bass spawn at the same time so maybe they are thinking about spawning. have a good day on the water and take care.
