Lake Fork Fishing Report Submitted March 25, 2007 By Guide James Caldemeyer

The spawn is in full swing here at Lake Fork! For those of you that are looking for an opportunity to catch a fish of a lifetime, this is the time of year to do it. There are a lot of big bass up shallow right now just waiting to be caught. Here are some tips for targeting these fish:

Locations: Key areas to focus on right now are in the backs of the creek arms and points that are adjacent to spawning flats. Creek channels leading to these flats will produce good results also. Fish can be found in a number of the many creeks and pockets on the lake right now. The fish have exploded into their spawning ritual this year and can be found on beds just about everywhere. Finding the areas that are holding the most concentrations of fish is the main objective.

Water Conditions: The lake is just over 2 feet low and the water clarity is clear to slightly stained in most areas. The recent water temperatures have been ranging anywhere from 62 to 68 degrees in the areas that I have been fishing in recent days.

Best Patterns: Bass can be caught a number of different ways during the spawn. My clients and I have been catching the majority of our fish on weightless rigs or slightly weighted when it is windy. The Grande Bass Rattlesnake has been my “go to” bait lately. This new bait has amazing effectiveness when fished slowly over and in the grass where these fish are making beds. Best colors have been shades of watermelon, green pumpkin and one of the new colors to the arsenal, trophy hunter. Rigging this bait on a plain 4/0 wide gap hook or a fluke hook of the same size with 1/16 ounce weight on it is the deal! Fishing it very slowly, with short twitches in between pauses, works best. The Grande Stick in watermelon red and green pumpkin will also take it’s share of fish. www.GrandeBass.com White or white/chart. double willow spinner baits in 3/8 and 1/2 ounce have produced some fish as well as a white chatterbait. I prefer a Talon spinner bait from www.leadheadlures.com They make some great jigs as well so make sure and check them out. Flukes in watermelon colors are a good choice for a real Lunker too! Sight fishing is excellent on days when there is some sun and not too much wind. So keep your flippin rod ready for when you see a big mama sitting on a bed. I have done best with a Grande Craw in the 3” size. White is a good color to see, but I prefer more natural colors like pumpkin/ chart or green pumpkin/orange if at all possible. Bubble gum craws and lizards work real well if you have some. A topwater bite has ensued already on yellow magics and frogs early and late or if it is cloudy in some areas.

Equipment/Tackle: I am rigging up my weightless Shimano Crucial 7ft med/heavy rods and Curados with Gamma 14lb. copolymer in the new moss green color. On my flippin rod, I use a 7’2” Crucial with my reel spooled up with 20lb. Gamma Fluorocarbon and a 1/4 to 3/8 ounce weight. Good fishing and God bless all you “Trophy Hunters” out there…A special thanks to my sponsors for their superior products and support but most of all I thank God for the ability and strength to do His work out on the water! Psalms 119:2 Reads…Blessed are they who keep his statutes and seek him with all their heart.

Tight Lines and God Bless, James Caldemeyer
