Date Fished: 5/5/2007
Water Temperature: 65
Water Clarity: 1 foot

Lake Taylorville, IL Prefish 3 May 07, Club Tournament 5 May 07

Prefishing 3 May 07

Lake conditions: Water as clear as I have seen Lake T water-white spinner bait one foot. Water temps around 65 F. Weather: Off and on rain no thunder. No sun. Wind E-NE 10-15.

I went to the lake and looked for spawners. Nothing in the backs. I whacked a 3-8 in the first 10 minutes on a Lake T colored jig with a watermelon seed big chunk trailer-tips dipped chartreuse. The big east cove with the rip rap point. The fish was an F full of eggs –no marks on it. For 2 hours I looked for signs of bedding fish-nothing except a bank runner or two. I tried chatter bait and cranks too. I went back to the jig and moved to deep water staging areas-started at midlake. I caught a 6-8 on the jig in 10 ft of water. Big female, full of eggs, not a mark on her. I knew that the catchable fish were staging females then. I moved North and repeated the deep water pattern. I caught another 3-8 on the jig in 4 ft of water just off 12 feet of water. Another female same story. A few yards later I caught another female, a 5-10. Just before quitting I got my limit fish a nice 4-4 female. That made roughly 20 lbs. 5 keepers-all on the jig, 8 short fish. The fish were not relating to wood or structure.

Tournament day. 5 May

Conditions had changed little since Thursday. It was real foggy at take off. Water temps around 65 F-they eventually warmed to 67-68 later. The wind was pretty calm and eventually swung out of the SE at 5-10 and the weather tried to clear at about 10:00. I fished with my son. We started on the prespawn pattern with the jig that I found on Thursday. The first bank was a zero. On the 2nd bank –near the park-just inside the cove, I got a nice 3-8. I put my son in the front of the boat but even then whacked a nice 4+ behind him. The fog lifted and the bite was slow. The sun popped out, we checked the backs to see if anything had moved up. Nothing. We then went back to the deep prespawn pattern-this time fishing wood. I was rewarded with a 5-8 on the jig behind my son. Then my son nailed a nice 3-9. That was the extent of our keepers. I caught 5 shorts that day. My three keepers weighed
