Water Temperature: 75
Water Clarity: 2-3 feet

The Guntersville Civitan Tournament was held yesterday, May 19, out of Waterfront Grocery. 44 Boats participated and most brought back their limits of three fish. We had a total payout of $4860 and bunches of draw prizes -- everyone got at least something.

David Gray and Greg Coots won with a total weight of 16-7 and also had the big bass of 7-11. They reported catching their bass primarily on spinnerbaits and jigs. Their payout was $2000 for winning the tournament and $200 for big bass.

Scott Koeling and Frelon Moore finished second with 16-5 and had a big bass of 7-9, both only two ounces out of a tie for the two firsts. They reported catching most of their fish on crankbaits, fished in about 12 feet of water. Their paycheck was $1075.

Ted Carlton and Jerry Wells finished third with 14-15, worth $575. Most of their bass were caught on worms fished on the drop-offs.

I lost the sheet for the fourth place fishermen, so I cannot report their total weight and names. Kevin Stubblefield and Scott Randles tied with James Smith and Gorge Jones for fifth and sixth, with a total weight of 13-12 and a paycheck of $245. Pat Kennamer and Tim Brown took seventh with 13-8 and won back their entry fee of $120.

The three-fish limit certainly seemed to help in reducing the fish kill. No one lost a fish during the tournament!!! I think that was reall great!!! We did loose one in the holding tank, but it had a deep hook in its throat and would have died even if it had been imediately released. Another bass was in the water and struggeling, but one of the fishermen was able to revive it.

I know the cool weather helped in reducing the fish kill, but coming off the spawn is also a very stressful time for the bass. None of the fish were very heavy -- they all had flat bellies like me (LOL). This makes me think the three-fish limit was very successful and I would incourage some of the other toruanments to consider it. Let me know what y'all think about it.

Jim
