Water Clarity: 4 feet or greater Fished five lakes in Vilas County last week. Smallies are off the beds, but they behaved differently in each lake. On lakes with shallow rubble flats (4-6FOW) caught smallies on orange colored crayfish (when rusty crayfish in the lake) pattern DT4. Plastics did not work in these lakes. On other lakes without much crayfish, caught fish on 5" Yum dingers (Senkos) with split shot 12" above. Casted to sand near the shore and when the YD got into about 6-8 FOW, the fish would hit. Crankbaits did not work in these lakes. I found this to be an interesting variation depending on food source.
