Well after almost 8 weeks without wetting a line, I am fishing again. After conversing for numerous years by internet, ukey28 and I finally fished from the same boat. I'd pick up on certain things during our correspondence and even though we would be unknown to each other on the street, it felt like I was meeting an old high school buddy again. I did breath a sigh of relief however, when I didn't notice any cement anchors in his rig! I was nervous of the fact that I'd learned that he had fished bass tournaments long before most knew what a tournament was. I knew he was good, far better than I'll ever be.

We launched under cloudy skies and light winds on a day that went to a downpour, to sunny, to cloudy, to sunny and breezy. We headed for Little Lake to see what the weed growth was like. Thick but not unfishable. I made the mistake of checking the weather forecast the day before and did not include any top-waters in my arsenal. ukey28 got the first fish to look up and had several others bump or check it out, but as flat as it was, we noticed no surface activity. I caught a little snake on a shallow crank. Heading to the main lake the evidence between a pro and a casual stick became apparent as his eyes were glued to the electronics. Upon finding where he wanted to try he opened his rod locker and pulled out his panfish rod, or what I assumed to be his panfish rod. I was rigging up a tube when I watch his rod load-up. There's one! There's one what?...sunfish?...rock bass? Nope,..largemouth! Good lord, he's fishing a piece of plastic I can hardly see. A cast or two later his rod loads up again. There's one! A short time later he gets another. I reach for my bag and my fine... my finnees... my finesse stuff! Uughghghg, I said it! Of course my doing this killed his bite. I suggest a move towards a spot I've caught SMB in years past. Upon pulling up we notice fish busting on baitfish. Top-water and spinner-bait failed to get noticed. I finally pick a fish up on a panfish....I mean finesse rig. It's a respectable SMB and I follow that up with a tiny spinner-bait SMB. We work into a cove and this is where ukey28 puts me in my place. Fishing a tube he puts one after the other in the boat. No fish likes anything I have to offer till ukey28 shares a tube with me and I connect with my first LMB of the day. It is also in this cove that ukey28 also tries to seduce a kicker fish into his bag with a frog worked over some small mats of weeds. He had two massive blow-ups that would have made nice additions to his bag, but it wasn't meant to be this day. We worked near where I caught the SMB for another small SMB then another cove with no luck before heading to our first stop on the main lake where ukey28 added another fish or two to his count. I took my fourth and last fish of the day on a tube in the channel as we made our way back to the ramp. We got near 20 fish on a day that really wasn't so much about the fish as it was about two guys sharing a common interest in both work and play. Thanks, Frank!
