Lake Shelbyville: Pre fish 27 July 07, Club Tournament 29 July 07.

I’m no Lake Shelbyville specialist. I fish it 3-4 times a year. Our club however has three or four Lake Shelby specialists-a couple in the top 10 in the state. They fish on the ITT. These guys are good. So I knew I was up against a tough one. On Friday I prefished. Water temp 77-78 water clear to stained, Lake at summer pool. Cloudy, light showers high around 85. Lake S’ville fishes completely different during the week compared to weekends-its easier and fish are bigger. To boot it was an ideal fishing day-low light, clouds low fishing pressure and no tuna boats. It should have been easy. I got there at first light. The buzz bait and chug bug did not work. So I moved deeper. The reports had all claimed that the fish could be found in their summer spots in 12-15 ft of water. I hit all the good spots I knew and nothing. I would start with a crank, then a deeper crank and finally a C rig and then a jig on each spot. By 8:00 I had a couple shorts and that’s it. Then I started fishing shallower. That was the ticket. Apparently the fish moved up due to the low light and low fishing pressure. I found them in 5 feet of water in the same areas (points). Even though there were clouds the bass were glued to the wood. I ended up catching 3 fish around 4 lbs. and one about 2 lbs.-all on a c rigged Black and Blue salt craw. I also caught 9 shorts including a couple on the chug bug and cranks. I figured I had about 14 lbs-4 fish in 8 hours. Of course, it was Friday and I knew Sunday would be much different.

Sunday, 29 July 07. Weather: some clouds early high about 90 then clearing about 9:00 to a hot bright day. Light NE winds and lotsa tuna boats. I went to my first point and started with topwaters with no luck. I went to the c rigged salt craw and started shallow and worked deeper. No bites. A typical Lake S’ville Sunday-tough. I moved to each of my points and simply could not get bit. I finally caught a short on my fourth point. The rest of the day went the same way. I tried several baits, including senkos, power worms creature baits and even the jig. I work all depths with no luck. Finally on my 8th point I caught a 2-4 20 feet down on the salt craw. That was it- 4 bites all day with only one keeper. Fortunately, the other guys had equally bad days. The specialists had a mixed day. One Lake Shelby specialist blanked one had 7-something lbs. The winner (who had been subbing on the ITT with a specialist) had 3 nice fish that went a little over 10 including big bass that was 5-4. Those were caught early on a frog (a Ribbit?). Most others were caught on C rigs. Surprisingly the shakey head did not play a role in any major catches.
