Got an early start on Quabbin coming out of Gate 43.Anticipation was high as we marked lots of smallmouth on our usual spots anywhere from 25-50 ft. Started out by drop shotting to the deep fish. A couple of taps, but nothing aggressive. Made some moves, and had a couple small fish take at about 25 ft. All the time I kept trying my favorite method...topwater. Nothing but small fish taking my poppers. Even over the deep spots. Switched over to jigs with yamo twintail grubs, and began picking away at the fish. The fish were not aggressive at all, and nothing big. The biggest fish of the day went about 15". We used jigs, poppers, drop shots rigs, blade baits...nothing could entice these fish to bite, even when we dropped right over them. We'd take a fish or two, right away, then nothing. Larger fish we did catch were sptting up 1 inch or so baby yellow perch. Went some 60 miles total by the GPS to find fish, which at days end had totalled around 30 fish between three fishermen. Called it quits after 10 hours. This was probably the slowest day I ever had at Quabbin, but is there ever a bad day fishing there? Saw quite a few eagles, and ospreys, with one osprey swooping down on our boat. Also marked what appeared to be a lot of lakers down on the deep humps from 60-90 ft. I live nearly 3 hours from Quabbin, so mre than likely this is my last trip there this year. Time for me to cover my boat, and put my small mouth gear away from the year...see you all next spring.
