Since my last the bite has switched from a shallow water bite to much more of the normal deep water patterns we are use to this time of year. I am still starting out in shallow water and moving out once it starts to heat up. Also pay attention and stay on alart as I have had a 9.64 come early in the moring in 15 feet of water on a texas rig and a 10.66 come out of 25 feet of water during the middle of the day. Look out as the big fish seem to be on the move in the last week. The numbers game has been a little up and down as the days with cloud cover or some clouds have been great and the days with pure sun shine and no clouds have been a little slower but that’s the days the big fish have poked their heads out it seems.

For the shallow water bite look for fish to be holding around shallow grass, pads, and stick ups, in 2 to 8 feet of water on the main lake and first halfs of the major creeks. We have had a great top water bite from first sun and expect it to last for about 30 mins. There are many different types of baits that have been taking these early morning fish. The best baits have been a Storm Chug Bug, a prop type bait, or a Super Spook Jr. all in shad colors. Work these baits very aggressively. Let those baits make some noise and be careful to not pull the baits away to fast as the bites have been very hard with loud and big splashes. After the 30 mins or so is up I will switch to a Gary Yamamoto Senko and start flipping it in the same cover as the top water. My best colors have been the greens and browns with some color of flake. I have been texas or wacky rigging the Senko with no weight for a slow fall. The bite has been very aggressive still and this pattern seems to hold up till 8:30am give or take a little. I will continue to stay shallow for a little while flipping a 1 ounce jig in and around the grass. This has been good for a few good slot fish before moving out to deeper water. Colors of the jig hasn’t seemed to matter.

Once this bite slows down I am hitting main and secondary points located in 12-18 feet of water with a Carolina rigged Gary Yamamoto Lizard or 4 inch Senko, or zoom super fluke. The best colors have been watermelon/red and pumpkinseed with a chart. dyed tail. I am fishing these on a 1 ounce weight with a 6 to 7 foot leader along with a 4/0 hook. Once again the bites have been very easily detected as the seem to be hitting very hard. Try to stay on points that have grass around the area that you are fishing. This has seemed to be where I am catching more fish. This pattern will hold through out the day.

Start looking at the graph if the points slow down. Start graphing humps, points, ridges, drop offs, road beds, and so on for balls of bait and fish located in 18-25 feet of water. For this I have been fishing a carolina rig and a 1 ounce jig. On the carolina rigging I am throwing the same baits as above and in the same colors. A Carolina rigged Gary Yamamoto Lizard or 4 inch Senko, or zoom super fluke. The best colors have been watermelon/red and pumpkinseed with a chart. dyed tail. I am fishing these on a 1 ounce weight with a 6 to 7 foot leader along with a 4/0 hook. I bites out deep have been a mix of hard to very slight pressure and changing on a daily basis. Once I have worked the area with a rig I am going back through the same area with a big 1 ounce jig with a big craw or creature trailer. I have been staying with the greens and browns for my color selection on the jig. I am working these jigs very slow just like a texas rigged worm. Pay attention as you are fishing this as jig bites can be funny at times.

I Still have some dates open for October such as the 15-17, 21-23, 29-31and November dates open for those wanting to get out on the water for some excellent fall fishing here on Lake Fork. I also have gift certificates available for all occasions. If you have any questions or would like to book a trip give me a call at 903-216-1867 and I will be happy to help you out.

Good luck on the water and be safe, Guide Jimmy Everett
