Wow what a day!! Started about 10 am in a hole below Hinton. On the first cast of the day I caught a 2 lb 9 oz smallie and thought this is going to be good. Four hours, 4 stops, 20 miles (in the trcuk) and several hundred casts later I had only 2 others to add to my total, a 1 lb even and a 1 lb 1 oz.

On the way through Hinton I thought I would stop at another hole that has produced several big fish for me over the years. With only 1 gate open I figured there wouldn't be enough water to hold any big fish, but I thought I might catch a couple of little fish. Boy was I wrong.

This spot has a large rockpile in the middle of a big eddy. When I pitched my jig out to the rockpile a school of shad spooked and took off in every direction. As soon as my jig hit the water I felt a hit and set the hook but missed it. I threw right back and again immediately got a hit and set the hook. A 3 lb 11 oz smallie took off running through the hole scattering the baitfish again. While I was fighting this one, two other big bass started busting the baitfish right in front of me. I weighed and released the fish quickly so I could get back to business. When I got back to my casting spot a big fish boiled on the baitfish again and I pitched to the swirl. Immediately the line loaded up and the fight was on. When I finally landed this one it weighed 5 lbs 9 oz. That's right a 3-11 and a 5-9 on consecutive casts. Before the action ended I also caught another 2-9 and a 2-11 and missed two others. Then it was over. I love fall/winter fishing on the New River. My best 5 weighed 17 lbs 1 oz. All caught on 1/8 oz homemade jig with paca chunk trailer in watermelon pepper.
