Subject: Lanier - Corps of Engineers Meetin, Georgia

Date Fished: 12/6/2007

Water Temperature: 54
Water Clarity: Not reported

Well, for the fishing report, here goes. The lake is down 19.5 feet and holding. The water release has slowed dramatically and the lake level is holding. The surface temps are holding at 55 or so. The water down south is extremely clear and the backs of the creeks has some "color". Call it what you want but it is stained for Lanier.

The fish are out there somewhere. Where, I am not sure. LOL. I am catching some fish on my trips. Some. Not tons. There are some big fish up shallow and if you are willing to run the banks for a while, you can catch them. The deep bite down the lake is almost non-existent for me. I am moving up lake tomorrow as I hear the bite is much better up there.

I have been catching some big fish up shallow on jigs, jerkbaits and spinnerbaits. I am just not catching many of them. I have had some 15-20 pound bags earlier this week. But, I would only catch 8-10 fish each day. I’m just not finding alot of them up there. The two fish in the picture above were part of a big stringer my client and I caught earlier this week. The largemouth is 3.5 pounds so you can make you own guess how big that spot is. We caught him on a jig in 10 feet of water on a sunny, rocky bank. He was alone. LOL....

As the water continues to cool, I truly believe the deep-water bite will get better. If not, I will lie about it and say they are eating it up in a few weeks. LOL. Just kidding. It will happen..

Now for some good news. On Wednesday, a group of Guides, local storeowners, Marina owners and contractors met with a large group of the Corps officers at the Buford Ga office. This meeting was called by the Corps of Engineers to evaluate and discuss the current boat ramp situation on Lake Lanier. I will try and put together some meeting note on my website as we go along but for now, I am going to try and summarize the first meeting.

The Corps have been out working on the existing dry ramps. Adding rock to protect the ramp edges as well as repairing some of the ramps, which have cracked slabs. The have also been working on a good many of the courtesy docks. This work will continue.

The partnership will be working together to get "some" of the current boat ramps extended out to the waters edge. Also, there were methods presented and discussed which can extend a ramp out into the existing lake which would allow immediate (after the concrete dries) usage with the current lake level. The Corps has identified a few ramps (strategically located) that we are going to try and get extended based on location, available parking and that would have a workable slope out to the waters edge. This would give us a bigger pool of ramps as the water begins to rise a few feet and in future drought conditions.

So what’s the big deal right? You guessed it. Funds. The biggest job for the task force will be to raise funds. The Corps will be able to supply some materials and labor but we will have to get funds to pay for the concrete and other materials. I think we have a good head start just from the generous people at the meeting. Some had checkbooks in hand ready to start. I would look for some movement on some of these ramps very soon. I know the Corps has started preparation on one ramp as we speak.

Hopefully, we will have more info on how and where everyone who is interested can help. I will try my best to keep you updated, as this will be a great thing for all of us. I don’t think we have seen the last of the low water situations and we are in our best possible situation to get this done.

You email me with any questions or comments you may have and I will do my best to answer what I can. I do not have all the answers but will do my best to help....

Thanks and good luck to everyone

Ryan
