Date Fished: 3/3/2008
Water Temperature: 60
Water Clarity: 2-3 feet

We’re still getting cold fronts rolling through, but things are definitely on the upswing for bass. Water temps are running high 50-low 60’s and the fish are starting to move up and look for places to spawn. The Mid lake area, Harvey Creek, Veach Basin, Caney Creek and the Black Forest have been pumping out some great stringers the past few weeks and the south end is starting to come on strong. I stayed in Ayish Bayou, Bear Creek, and Buck Bay last week and had some decent days and some slow ones. Water temps was critical and finding the warmest water was key to finding groups of larger fish as opposed to scattered small cruisers. I can’t stress enough that this time of years you need to back out when you find small fish on the bank and find the first good break line. Whether it is a timber line or grass line, that’s where the bigger females are setting up to move shallow and get on beds. The depth will be anywhere from 6-10 feet and although you won’t get as many bites, the size of these bass will make up for the lack of action. I always see boats sitting on top of these fish chunking towards the bank with only small fish to show for their efforts. I can usually move out a bit and catch fish right where they were sitting. Best presentations have been Soft Jerkbaits, Wacky Worms and Light Texas rigs. Best baits have Flukes, Trick Worms, Lizards and Ring Worms. Watermelon, Redbug and Green Pumpkin colors have all been producing. I have had some luck as well fishing Carolina Rigs and Drop shots off long, tapering points. Lizards, Baby Brush Hogs and Trick Worms will all get your string stretched. Wind can hamper this pattern but the fish out in this 12-18 foot water are usually bunched up and aggressive. I have most of May and June booked for Crappie and I’m looking forward to the summer brushtop bite. But if you wanna get in on some great spring bassing, gimme a shout or visit my website at www.RogerBaconOutdoors.com
