Took 3 hr bus ride from Seoul to Andong (Largemouth Bass Mecca of Korea). I got a guide service from the fishing shop near the big church (not too far from bus terminal).

He had a 15' nitro with 60hp motor. We launched after climbing a mountain then going down a steep hill - thank god for the 4 wheel drive truck.

This is interesting. We launched at the water's edge and he left his trailer in the water, the truck parked at the shoreline. Later, while we came back, another truck had launched a small boat then it got stuck in the mud.

It was warm (75), a full moon, and the pre-spawn conditions on a very rocky, sandy, gravel highland reservoir. The water is 150' deep at the dam and most shoreline is a 45 degree bank - very steep. Most of the afternoon, the boat was in 30' of water with us casting to the shore.

We found success in the backs of pockets off the main lake and a main creek channel. In the back, there would be a some stream in a very steep ravine and some vegetation in a very small spawning flat.

After trying 10 things unsuccessful, I let the guide pick my lure (a suspending jerkbait - which I had started with but switched too quickly). I caught two Korean fish that looked like silvery trout, then 2 largemouths - both about 6#. The fish at Andong are pretty large in general. The reservoir was created in 1976, but the cut down all the trees. Still, I think it is a boom.

Cost was $140 for the boat and $60 for the guide - it could have been 10 hours, but we started at 1pm for 5 hours. They finish at 6pm.

The guide caught some nice fish using a jig in slightly deeper water - leaving the spawning flats to me. When he felt he was caughting too many fish compared to me, he would stop. He was a kind man.

The climb up the hill from the launch was treachous but the total experience was wonderful.
