This report is for the past three days.My good friend and client Mickey B of S.C finally got a break from the family business to come down and fish for three day. It has been three years sense Mickey and I fished together. Monday morning we headed out looking for some schooling fish and didn't really find what we were looking for as far as shad in the river.Very few shad but when you seen a shad there was a bass right on this tail this usually makes it though fishing because the bass are so zeroed in on that one shad he usually will not hit and artificial bait no matter how well you can cast. Another couple hours with only 1/2 doz fish we headed to the shiner hole and this proved to be the right choice as Mickey was on fire hooking big fish after big fish total for the day was about 15 fish with three weighing between 7 and 8 lbs and every other fish weighing over 5 lbs Day two Tuesday we headed north on the river looking for some big schooling fish and it didn't take long to find some nice fish busting shad after catching 10 or 12 topwater fish we headed to a ledge to fish some crankbaits and this paid off as well with 5 fish up to 6 lbs on a Laser Lure Deep Diving Crank Bait. The last three hrs we spent flipping pads and again caught some nice fish up to 6 lbs and lost a few BIG FISH a long the way.Total for this day was around 20 all on artificial baits The last day was today and Mickey was only fishing for a half day so he could make the drive back to S.C by tonight. We loaded up with 30 big wild shiners and headed out.We pulled up on the shiner spot and the shad were thick and the fish were busting like crazy on the edges of the pads. The first fish which was the only little fish caught today hit a shiner as soon as it hit the water and this little three pounder was so fat from shad he could hardly swim away when I unhooked him and turned him loose.Thre next four or five BIG fish just would not eat the shiners as they would blow up on them and run but everytime Mickey would set the hook there was nothing their.I figured they were just stuffed with shad and not really wanting to eat the big shiners but at the same time could not let a wild shiner swim in there area without taking a swipe at them. This all changed over the next couple hrs as the BIG GIRLS started inhaling the shiners and heading for cover. Mickey ended up catching 10 fish with all but one weighing between 6 and 9 lbs. This was a great 3 day trip with a great friend that I have missed the past three years. This area of the St Johns River is only minutes from Orlando ,Disney World and Daytona Beach.Pictures of this trip will be posted at www.basschallenger.com fishing Report page.
