Date Fished: 4/20/2008
Water Temperature: 58
Water Clarity: 2-3 feet

Finally got out on 4/20/2008 on Champlain. I can't believe the weather. It seems like we went straight from winter into summer and skipped spring altogether. The water is high, over the 100-foot mark, but the water temperatures are more like late May early June. This time of year I normally see mid to high 40's, with some areas pushing low 50's. But we launched out of Larabee's on the Vermont side across from Ticonderoga at 9am and the water temperature was 54. Throughout the day running just a little north of the paper plant and as far south as Benson we encountered everything from 54 to 61. We were catching largemouth that had red tails in 1 foot of stained water in flooded trees -- a sure sign they're starting to bed already ! Unheard of for the 3rd week of April. Tree fish came on flipping tubes and 7-inch black worms. Mostly though we threw suspending jerkbaits and diving cranks around rocky points. Caught somewhere around 40-50 bass for the day with the biggest going 5lb 10oz (on a spinnerbait in 1 foot of water high on a flooded point). Color choice was everything, as you could throw certain color cranks until your arm fell off with no hits, but put on one certain color and you'd go 10 bass for 10 casts. We mostly hit largemouths, but had maybe a dozen smallies mixed in. No corkers there. Probably 2.5lbs was the best smallie. Just great to finally get out after a long winter. But with as hard and cold as the end of March and the beginning of April was, I can't believe we've had nearly 2 weeks straight of sunny, cloudless, hot days in the high 70's and even breaking the 80's. No wonder the water temp is 60. We need some cold rain to slow things down.
