Water Clarity: 0 Got so anxious to launch the boat on Saturday that I forgot to check the drain plug and found out you just can't sink a Ranger, even a 21 year one. I gave it a good shot though. An 1/2 hour later, after getting the near sinking incident under control, the trolling motor steering footpedal control went kaput. After taking it apart and put back together again on the water, I finally started fishing and had a blast. Caught over 30 fish on Sammies and Pop-R's early...then jigheads...then carolina rigs...then spinnerbaits..then jigheads again. No luck with flukes or trick worms though. Best 5 were over 15-lbs (17-lbs. if the 5-lb plus Spot lost at the boat could count).
Caught that one (almost) on a Carolina finesse worm. Line just got heavy when I suddenly realized that I had a fish on and I wasn't just hung up on a rock. When I set the hook hard, she immediately launched her total self completely out of the water. It was one of those priceless "we need a bigger boat" moments. Had her right up to the boat where she made two more runs. She came unbuttened though when I tried to gently lift her into the net. Sickening feeling, that hits you about 15 seconds later.
Fished the secondary clay points and islands near wood at the lower end of the lake.
Almost a perfect day (drain plug, trolling motor, and lost 5-lber notwithstanding). Weather reports must have kept many at home.
