Fishing at Varner is now changing a little. After weeks of prespawn and spawning activity many fish are moving into a postspawn stage and some fish near areas where the first big males moved up in March are already out on offshore spots in deeper water. There are also still plenty of fish that have not spawned yet and in past years we always get some really big ten pound plus fish that move up from deep water areas in early and mid May. These can often be the biggest spawning fish of the year so if you give up on the spawners you could miss the fish of a lifetime. The good part of this time of year is that you can fish a bunch of different ways and still catch fish.

Over the past two weeks we have caught fish off beds sight fishing , on topwaters, shallow and deep running swimbaits, and plastics. We have also caught fish as deep as fifteen feet deep as well as right on the bank. Plastics have been the best producer of numbers of fish while sight fishing is still the best chance at a big one. For the most part we have been mixing it up to catch 10-20 fish a day with best fives going around twenty pounds twice with most days producing between 10-15 lbs for the best five. If past years repeat themselves we should see a bunch of deep fish move shallow to spawn over the next week and spawning should wind down and finish up for the most part the following week with very few fish left spawning during the next full moon. After that it will be time for what is usually the best fishing of the year on Varner for both numbers and size during late May through June as the fish get schooled back up and start to feed heavily again.

I have days open including this Friday and Saturday. Just give me a call at 770-362-0942 to book a trip for Friday.-Randall
