Overall, the morning bite has been kind of tough for me the past week or so. It always seems Smith goes through cycles during the Spring when the fish are really on and then can almost shut down. I'm thinking the cooler spring we are experiencing has a lot to do with the tough bite lately as far as the morning bite is concerned. I've mentioned to several people that the lake is about 2 to 4 weeks behind what I normally see for this time of year. The good news is, (if my theory is correct) that we should have some great top water action through June and possibly into July.

I went out yesterday and pretty much stunk it up with a buddy of mine, only catching a couple of unders, but today was a different story. I hit an area that I don't normally fish and pretty much loaded the boat. I believe I had 7 overs (4 of the overs being good quality fish)and a maybe a slot or 2, plus my usual token stripe for the morning. In addition I lost a nice 4 to 5 lb LM in the process. It just goes to show that any given area on the lake this time of year can be a gold mine if you pull up to the right spot.

I've also been out a couple of times at night. I can't buy a bite after dark. If anyone has any suggestions, I'd like to hear them.

Storms last Saturday morning threw a monkey wrench into the last Early Morning tournament. Only a few boats showed up and we felt it was best just to cancel for the day. My partner and I waited the storms out and went out after the storms passed. We had a decent morning catching a few overs, but we didn't have anything really impressive. Anyway, we will try it again this Saturday morning blasting off at 5:00 a.m.
