  Subject: Tidal Potomac River, Maryland

Submitted by Reel Bass Adventures

Date Fished: 5/9/2008
Water Temperature: 69
Water Clarity: 1 foot

The fishing was great this past week. Bass were caught on a variety of patterns, although many centered around soft plastics with very light weights worked through grassbeds in coves along the river. 4" soft stickbaits in pumpkin/green flake, purple/green & red flake, watermelon/gold flake, Paca Craws & Berkley Critter Craws in black/blue, green pumpkin, or pumpkinseed/black flake, and Zoom Finesse Worms in red bug, june bug, or red shad were our best soft plastics. We found the key to consistent action to be rigging the baits Texas rigged with as little as a 1/16 oz weight and working the baits over the tops of the grass. Heavier weights didn't produce nearly as well as they fell through the grass faster while the lighter weights stayed on top of the grass clumps. For bass willing to chase reaction lures, we had success with 3/8 and 1/2 oz. Chatter Baits in white/chartruese or black/blue, Mann's Baby 1 minus crankbaits in red or chartreuse threadfin, and Strike King Red Eye rattle baits in red/chartreuse or blue/chrome. With 3 inches of rain last night, expect the D.C. waters and those around larger tributaries to become muddy quickly, but the tributaries will be the first areas to clear, while the main river may take awhile to return to normal. There is also a large amount of debris floating in the river, which makes navigation dangerous.
