took my fishing buddy Jess out today to see about getting some bedding smallies. Jess had never done sight fishing before, but that was going to change. I stopped at a spot that always has a bed or two and right off found one. I flipped a tube to it and handed Jess the rod while explaining what I was doing. It didn't take long and Jess set the hook on a very nice fish. We didn't weigh anything today, but all fish were 3+ pounds. We continued up the shore and soon Jess was fighting another smallie. The weather was overcast and windy, so it was really hard to see many beds. We found several beds that didn't hold any fish yet, so the spawn is just starting. We finally found another big bed and Jess landed another thick smallie. The weather conditions changed to worst, with high winds and rain starting, so I made one more move and landed our last fish for the day. Jess really likes this idea of catching fish you can see, "this is easy" she said, but little does she know, it takes patience and practice to know "where" to look and not all fish will bite when you do find them.
