Fishing at Varner was pretty tough over the weekend. I know you can't tell from the photos but it was tough for numbers with most of the fish in the lake suspended over deep water. Perfect time for going after the biggest fish in the lake. If your not going to get numbers of fish you might as well try to catch the biggest fish in the lake. For the last two weeks the big fish bite has been on with my clients and myself hooking into a bunch of eight pound plus fish. Fishing for giant fish is not the same as fishing for keeper size fish or even the same as a tournament guy looking for a six or seven pound kicker fish in a tournament. It's looking for a giant size fish with different habits than smaller fish in very specific locations and being willing to fish for the one big bite whether it comes or not.

My clients Friday, a father and son, were repeat clients who wanted to target the biggest fish in the lake. The son who had already caught a nine pounder on a trip with me a couple of years ago really wanted his dad to get the big one this time since it was Fathers Day weekend. To make a long story short the Dad would hook into two big fish before the day was over and catch a giant that was almost 27 inches long and over 18 inches in girth. To add to the fun he caught it on spinning tackle and eight pound line.

Saturday it was a tough bite and we only had around five bites all day long. Two of those were big fish bites and one of those made it to the boat. If you are only going to catch one it might as well be a big one. We caught it near the end of the trip when we decided to fish the same spot the biggest fish was caught off of the day before. The fish is the smaller fish of ones in the photos.

Sunday was a tough bite as well. I had a couple of beginners out and taught them the basics of fishing soft plastics at Varner. Had about four bites and caught two fish. One was a four pounder and the other was a two pounder.

I am starting to book trips for July. My first open day is July 11th.
