  Subject: Lake Champlain, southern, Vermont

Date Fished: 6/20/2008
Water Temperature: 69
Water Clarity: 2-3 feet

Pulled into South Bay Friday shortly before 7am and was surprised to find myself the first boat to launch. Weather was cloudy, but would leap-frog all day with sunny-skies and short rain-showers. Wind wasn't much of a factor. Picked up a creature-bait and started flippin'. Half hour later found a small pocket that would yield 7 LMB including big fish of over 4lbs. Flipped for several hours but found no bass outside this little pocket. Made a short run north to a crank-bait bank that yielded zero bites. Switched to flipping for a weed patch or two for another waffle. Started north again when a bank that was like glass made me pull a top-water rod out for the first time this year. Another swing and a miss. Chatter has everybody catching 50-75 fish a day down here on every type of bait and I can't even attract a toothy critter. Pulled a floating worm out and started working inches of water with wood nearby. Finally start attracting the attention of a few fish still hiding in the woods. Should have stayed with this pattern in the river, but Benson was calling. Started fishing my spots when I looked down and noticed I had every rod out of the box on deck. A few lure changes and I still can't find the 'every-bait' the chatter says their getting them on. Floating along I get a fish now and then that runs into my spinner-bait and finally get one on a shallow-crank but it's a long time between fish. Work my way to a point that is glassy on the sheltered side and grab my floating worm and cast into the woods again to have a nice fish dart out and grab it. Several trees later a huge mouth comes out from now where and inhales my bait. Nearly four pounds of fish from inches of water on spinning-gear. Fun! Worked that bank and further down but had no more takers. Made the haul back down lake and stopped one last time on that little pocket before loading up, getting one chunk on my first flip followed shortly by another plus a dink. Guess I should have stayed flipping south. Had a couple dozen LMB on the day that would have put together a nice bag.
