Hi bassers, fished a tournament on South Branch yesterday. The morning started out with overcast skies, drizzle, fog and a East wind, but that is perfect conditions to fish for the big smallmouth that roam that lake, so we thought... It was an open that me and my fishing buddy hosted with only 7 boats showing up, off we went. The conditions changed as the day went on, with the skies looking like it was going to clear off then it would almost rain and back to drizzle and then nothing. It really had the fishing and fish mixed up, but there was some guys that knew the water, and it wouldn't stop them from catching their 5 fish limit and maybe even culling some. So, fastforward 8 hours and here are the results...

1st 5/13.74 2nd 5/12.78 (me) 3rd 5/12.07 lunker 3.40

Most tournaments on here are won with 18+ lbs and lunker is 4+. This really shows how tough the conditions were against the quality anglers that fished. Most of the guys were guys I have fished with or against before and like me, have come to the scales with 18-20 lbs here before with 5 smallies. Lots of 2-2.8 lb fish were caught and made it fun to be on the water. Seemed like most were taken off of rock piles in 4-8 fow, and a jig or senko worked the best. I caught 3 fish on spinnerbaits first thing in the morning, but by noon, I was culling them out, a 1.6/1.9 and a 2.0 on jigs for a 2.6/2.15 and a 3.1 which were excellent culls. I still had the 2.6 left at the end of the day, but thats a good fish to try and cull under the conditions. Hope everyone had a great week-end, and if I don't report before the 4th, have a great 4th of July and be safe my friends, David
