Water Clarity: Not reported

I took a couple weeks off in late June and early July since my daughter was born on June 23. We named her AnnaBeth Joy Kirkpatrick and she weighed six pounds fourteen ounces.

I have fished lake Towaliga in Henry County three times over the past couple of weeks. The fishing at Towaliga has been excellent and we have caught anywhere between 30-50 fish on a bunch of different baits. Weights for the best five have been anywhere from fifteen to over twenty five pounds. Topwaters and soft plastics have been getting most of the fish but swimbaits and jigs have been getting the larger fish. The fish can be caught anywhere from one to fifteen feet of water with most of the better fish coming from the eight to twelve foot range on offshore structure. The fish bite all through the day with the better fish coming aroud midday on swimbaits. In the photos with this report the Towaliga fish are in the top two photos. The big one was caught on a swimbait fished over a channel.

Over the past few days I have been fishing Horton. The fish at Horton are fat and feeding on big schools of shad. There is a good topwater ,swimbait and glide bait bite there on cloudy days and early am. There has also been some schooling fish over deep water from 8-10 am. Later in the day the bite moves offshore around creek channels and long points. The deep fish are hitting crankbaits, big worms, jigs and jighead worms. I had five fish that went twenty-five pounds in ten casts with a crankbait on Friday prefishing for a tournament. Fished the JBA tournament yesterday with Adam Stanton and we won the tournament with fourteen pounds and missed big fish by just ounces with a 4.10 fish. We had a bright sky early which made fishing a little tough and storms came though later. The big crankbait fish I found Friday never did bite but we got a good limit on plastics fished on jigheads in wood cover on creek channel ledges. The fish in the bottom photos are fish from Horton. The fish on the right hit a swimbait one day early last week and the two fish on the left are two of our fish from the tournament yesterday.

All I can say about Varner right now is that it is tough to almost impossible to get any good fish to bite one day and the next day they will bite and you can get twenty-five pounds with no problem. The lake has a shortage of larger shad to get the fish feeding well in deeper water so most of the fish are feeding on smaller fry and small bluegill. The fish are scattered anywhere from one to fifteen feet deep and there is no one pattern that works on every day. You just have to get out there and try different things and keep moving until you find something that works.

Kedron is the best lake for numbers right now I have done a couple of trips with kids and we have caught 20-50 fish. Most are going to be smaller fish but the fish always bite there. Grass beds have been the best producers in ten feet or less of water.

I have days open for trips in both July and August. The big topwater and frog bite at JW Smith will be starting soon also so call now to book your trip for August when the bite should be best.-Randall
