Haven't been on Champlain in nearly a month and it's been three weeks since I've wet a line. I launched having no agenda other than to have fun and learn how to fish again! Put in at South Bay under cloudy skies and a light southern breeze. Cutters have harvested my better chestnut spots so I flipped the remaining nut/milfoil mix. This resulted in a couple of dinks before I gave that effort up and started working a toad pattern around some weeds they partially cut to find a bunch of dinks willing to help me fine-tune my hook setting technique. Toothy critters also loved that salty-toad and quickly depleted my only bag like they were potato-chips. Stopped setting the hook on what I thought were slime-darts and nearly missed boating a 3lb LMB giving it slack at first hoping it would come unglued, then realized it was the type of fish I was looking for. Pointed the boat north and made a short run to check a bank out but didn't stay long. Ran to my favorite crank-bait bank and up till this trip had only picked up a stray fish or two. Only made a few casts with the shallow-crank when I could feel a fish inhale, then start making the head-shake I love about crank-fish. Scale said it was 3.7 and was quickly followed up by a 3lb fish. Finally their back, and I've got a half mile more of bank! I truely lost count on the numbers and it's been awhile since I've hit into such good quality size fish. Finished that bank and kept the trolling motor in the water to pick-up several more chunks that were scattered about on the crank-bait and picked up a few on top-waters, one that pulled the scale down to 3.7 also. Ran to another bank I like but failed to get much going on that bank. Ran back to the best bank and did as well or better the second time even though the boat traffic had made the water murky. I was going to make a third pass but I didn't like the dark clouds that were forming and circling around my head. I caught more than I deserved today anyway. Never did get a kicker, but I did see one as it threw my crank when it jumped at the boat.
