Subject: Tidal Potomac Ri ver, Maryland

Submitted by Reel Bass Adventures

Date Fished: 7/26/2008
Water Temperature: 85
Water Clarity: 1 foot

Water temperatures have been in the mid to upper 80s all week. Bass have been relating to thick grass mats or deep creek ledges. An early moring topwater bite has been great, regardless of the tide phase. On high tides, grass frogs and buzzbaits produce well around thick grass, and low tides are excellent times to fish outside weed edges or creek channel edges with chugger or propeller type baits. We have been using as much as 1-3/4 oz. tungstun weights pegged to our creature baits to punch through the thick mats of grass and reach the larger bass that have been in the mats. Most of our larger bass are coming from mats located in 3-5 feet of water, and if deep water is nearby, we have found more quality bass than those located on flats away from the deeper water. Berkley Chigger craws or Reaction Innovation Sweet Beavers are good baits for fishing grass mats, and we saturate them with liquid Smelly Jelly to make them as slick as possible to aid in getting them to fall through the mats. Green pumpkin, black/blue, or sapphire blue work well and chartreuse paired with these colors seems to trigger more bites. In creeks, we continue to catch bass on Zoon finesse or trick worms rigged on 1/8 oz. heads or weightless soft stickbaits, and green pumpkin or watermelon/gold flake have been consistent producers. We continue to twitch Mann's Baby 1 Minus crankbaits several times like topwater baits before beginning our retrieve and this technique results in solid strikes.
