  Subject: Lake Champlain, southern, Vermont

Submitted by slink16 #3477 (ip 75.68.209.33)

Date Fished: 7/30/2008
Water Temperature: 75
Water Clarity: 2-3 feet

Chatter had the lake being a muddy mess from all the storms passing through during the last week. Launched at South Bay with the lake being a foot higher than last trip. Fog covered the lake, but was not thick and would burn off as the sun got higher. Water was as clear as when I fished it before all the storms. Chestnut cutters are playing hop-scotch: cutting one bed while skipping another; cutting part of one on their way to to work on another. Very strange strategy??? First few fish came on a spinnerbait out of some milfoil the cutters missed. Tried flipping one nut edge for nothing. Picked up my first buzz-bait fish of the year out in the main lake while checking the color out in the river and decided to work my way north. Ran to the bank that was good to me last trip and found the crankbait fish still there although numbers and size caught dropped this trip. Never saw another bass boat all day so fished some spots I've not had a chance to yet. Went about the day catching fish on the crankbait, spinnerbait, buzzbait and one or two frog fish called out of the slop. Wind wasn't a factor and I should have run further north to try some topwater action but the motor is acting up so I'd rather she fail on me closer to my trailer. Cloudy skies pulled in about the time I realized I'd had enough sun or that buzzbait would still be fishing. 3.25lb LMB was big one today but a number of fish between 2.5-3 roughed up the thumb again. Weeds were a pain today but I think I caught fish on each of the thirty casts I had that didn't pick up a weed out of the two-thousand that did!
