Water Clarity: 1 foot Algae blooms on the Maryland side of the main river have affected bass activity. On days where the wind blows the algae onto the Maryland shoreline, the bass in the main river grassbeds are very difficult to catch. But if the algae is washed from the grass by current or wind, the bass bite improves. The Virginia shoreline doesn't seem to be affected nearly as much by algae and the grassbed bite has been more consistent. We are finding the frog bite to be much tougher than earlier in the summer, and flipping mats of grass is both tiring and many times unproductive. However, the bass that we are catching in grass mats are quality fish, with many exceeding 4 pounds. Meanwhile, the front third of tidal creeks hold plenty of willing bass, and a variety of lures have proven effective. Poppers, buzzbaits, and prop baits work well during low light phases, and a wacky rigged soft plastic stickbait is producing well when the sunlight becomes a factor. Bass are also in hydrilla beds, and a Mann's baby 1 minus or chatterbait worked over the top of the grass works very well. The spinnerbait bite is improving as well, and we are seeing a number of quality bass striking white/chartreuse 1/4 to 3/8 oz. spinnerbaits with twin willow leaf blades.
