  Subject: Lake Champlain, Vermont

Submitted by Loweman (ip 69.128.196.110)

Date Fished: 8/25/2008
Water Temperature: 70
Water Clarity: 2-3 feet

1st time ever fishing southern Champlain - left home @2:45 am and arrived at Benson Landing at 5 a.m.... I was surprised that the lake was still so high ( the dock at the launch was underwater). Brought along 2 friends, and all 3 of us are just hackers who are learning how to fish for bass. Launched under clear, calm skies and fished the VT side as we headed north with the trolling motor. Within 10 casts Gerard hooked into a huge northern on a red Rat-L-Trap under some brush cover in front of a steep bank. Pike was the first for all of us, but got away on Dwayne's third attempt at netting it. Continued north and no luck on top of vegetation with frogs, missing one when I let it sit answering my cellphone (serves me right!). Gerard and I caught and released 4 medium sized LMB's on white spinnerbaits on the VT side of the green can across from Mill Bay, in about 8-10 feet of water. To our surprise Gerard landed his first ever walleye on a spinner here, about 18 inches long. After no luck again on top of vegetation around the point, we decided to head north to explore. Just for kicks we decided to troll, and I quickly boated and released a 3 and 4 lb SMB within minutes trolling a blue/orange crankbait in 12-15 feet of water toward the NY side just south of the red buoy, next to the railroad tracks. Headed home soon after, altogether on the trip we boated 1/2 dozen LMB, largest 2 lbs, and 3 SMB, largest 4lbs, one walleye, one pickerel and of course some perch and the one missed pike at the boat. Probably a bad day for guys who know what they're doing, but for us it was not bad! Had a lot of fun and welcome any advice!
