After Friday’s trip, my 4-year-old says she’s ready to take on The “Spinnerbait Kid” one on one, armed with her Dora and Snoopy rod/reel setups! That’s because when the fog lifted, we found a school of chunkers in an area by a river ledge where I notice the water curls. They were pulling 45,000 cubics at the darn dam, it rose to near 90 degrees and an American lure finally beat out the Japanese for the first time this year. USA, USA, USA! Well, it only took about 50 trips to do it, but hey, let’s hear it for the good ole US of A. Of course, it’s a discontinued lure. Since I had my little gal with me, we decided to troll in heavy fog to the spot I wiped them out when I went solo on Wednesday. TVA dropped the water pool back down to 594, they had instinctively moved out, but we found some fish on the bank just across from there. They were small. When the fog finally lifted at about 9 a.m., I was going one place, but decided to stop at another on the way. I know we’ve all done that. Good thing, we didn’t catch anything at the place I was initially going. I just found this other spot a few weeks ago and when we came up from the deep into the flat, bass were waiting. Right away, I caught two bass that were 2 plus pounds each. That’s when we noticed this school of fish back out by the drop on the channel, so I headed the 100 yards or so through the flat. I saw some pretty good size fish jumping into the air, as if they were being chased, too. As it turned out, it was a bunch of solid bass. I took the bobber off my daughter’s tiny Dora setup and let her cast some with a small jig. She’d been practicing casting a lot in the driveway, so she can toss it pretty good. This was only her second time out with me. The first time, she just mostly watched and played around. I had just put some fresh 8 pound line on her Dora and backup Snoopy rod/reel setups and had the drags set for action. We waited for the piranhas to rise again, and when they did, I told her to cast right in the middle of the swirls. She did and right away her little rod doubled. She started screaming, later she told me she thought the fish was going to take her in the water. She hung on. The drag screamed, too. The fish jumped and jumped and jumped. It was no small schoolie, this was a nice 4 pounder. She fought it for a long time, but we got it in. She took her cap and sunglasses off, and in her best Australian voice said; “Now that’s a fish!” This was just the start. We caught at least 5 four pounders, even more 3 pounders, and had a blast. No giants, but good solid fish. Best five easy 20 pounds (of course), best 10 over 30 pounds. Great limit on a day that started out in the 60s, but before it was over; I was dumping water on our heads to cool down. Late in the day, when we came back to the spot, a whole school followed my daughter’s bait back to the boat. The first fish to take a swipe at it was a giant bass slashing up from the side. I don’t know if Dora could have handled that one. I guess I need to get her a new rod and reel. If anyone has any ideas, please let me know. She can’t handle a big rod/reel setup yet, it needs to be bigger than a Snoopy, but smaller than what we all use. Anyway, after that giant bass missed the bait, about 5 three pounders chased it and surfaced at the boat. I saw the school of bass look up at us in the boat looking down at them. As if to say, “Holy moley!” they darted back down to safety as these elder smarter fish realized the error in their ways. That pretty much hooked my child on fishing. That’s all I’ve heard about since we got back home, the ones that swam away. As we motored the boat toward the launch at about 5 p.m., a tremendous storm rolled in. The water was calm as we went toward the ramp area. Suddenly, the wind came up like crazy and there was much lightning as I put my gal safely in the truck. That’s how fast things can change out there. In a matter of seconds. Just a few minutes ago, we were watching a beautiful sky with the sun sending rays through the clouds. Needless to say, I’ve got a little girl that’s now hooked on fishing. And “kid,” watch out, Dora’s looking for you! And oh, she said, not only is she going to braid her hair, she’s going to braid her line.
