  Subject: Lake Champlain, southern, Vermont

Date Fished: 9/2/2008
Water Temperature: 73
Water Clarity: 2-3 feet

The lake was as foggy as my plans for the day, when the boat floated off the trailer at South Bay. Seems I've been having difficulty finding and catching fish the last couple trips. Today was much the same, save a last ditch effort to salvage the day. Skies would be sunny all day with a light wind coming out of the north. Water started at 68 but would warm to 73 by days end. Every fish, except for one crankbait fish, all took some sort of salty plastic. First few took twitched or dead sticked plastic around clumps of milfoil. Before I knew it the day was better than half over and all I had were several dinks. Picked up my flippen-rod and started punching a creaturebait through the chestnut. Started getting more bites with fish size only mildly bigger than earlier fish. Best nut had had a layer or two that had been taken away by the cutters. Took a moment to try and figure out why I wasn't getting bigger bites. Wanted to blame the fish relocation program that's been going on for several seasons out of Plattsburg. A Vermont guy has won three tournys, one last week and two this past weekend, with over a 4lb average up there. Made one last ditch effort by heading to another nut-bed I'd passed earlier. I also put a heavier weight on and changed to a long-slim creature instead of a fat-stubby bait. Finally but a chunk in the boat at nearly four pounds that hit it the second it slipped under the nut. Followed that one with a near match, only this one took it off the bottom. Minutes later another 3+ chunk is in the boat followed by a two pounder. Finally made something happen but it was late in the day and I needed to get going. Overall still a slow day save the last minute flurry which was just enough to get me thinking about the next trip!
