  Subject: Tidal Potomac River, Maryland

Submitted by Reel Bass Adventures

Date Fished: 9/6/2008
Water Temperature: 82
Water Clarity: 1 foot

Successful main river fishing the past two days has been dependent on tidal phases. Low tides produce well while high tides have been tough. Grass beds are producing with grass frogs and by flipping grass mats with heavy weights and a crawfish imitation bait. Our favorite has been a Berkley Chigger Craw in green pumpkin. We have found that if the bass don't strike the green pumpkin craw, dipping the claws in chartreuse dye has changed the color enough to entice bites. In the creeks, hydrilla has made the water very clear, especially on outgoing tides. On high tide phases, large buzzbaits or grass frogs produce in areas where hydrilla and pads are both present, and during low tide phases we have had great success with chugger baits or prop baits such as a Baby Torpedo. Another successful bait fished over grass has been a 3/8 oz. chatter bait in dark colors with gold blades. Soft plastics such as finesse worms, soft plastic stickbaits or smallie beavers work well on grass edges during low tide phases, and in the past two days we have found a good bite with Strike King Bitsy Bug jigs rigged with a twin tail grub pitched onto the hydrilla then pulled off and allowed to fall to the bottom on a slack line. Small crankbaits in shad color or brown crawfish catch bass when retrieved into the main creek channels during low slack tide.
