Water Clarity: 1 foot After hearing several rumors about hundreds of schooling bass being caught on DOAs I convinced my neighbor to give the Mobile/Tensaw Delta a try yesterday, even though we assumed the Delta would be a mess after Hurricane Gustav. Low tide came just after 2 AM so we launched on the Causeway at 10 AM. The water was still in the parking lot but fairly clear, so we abandoned our game plan of fishing the Spanish and Raft Rivers and headed for grass that we knew of in Bay Minette Basin. One redfish, one flounder and two very small bass later we moved out to the Blakely River. Nothing. We moved over to the west side of Chocalotta Bay where we found plenty of grass and small speckled trout but no bass. We quit at 2 PM, supposedly just before low tide, with the water still fairly high. There were plenty of shrimp and bait fish everywhere we went. Either we were not using the right bait (I threw DOAs and spinnerbaits mostly while my neighbor stayed with a beetle spin and worm), the bass are not in the lower Delta where they should be this time of year, the rumors of great catches are not true, or the fish were just not biting. The water seemed to be in pretty good shape in spite of all the rain lately but I had to guess at the water temp as my neighbor's water temp doesn't work (we fished from his boat).
There is another rumor that the bass are active in Dog River now and there will be an open tournament out of Luscher Park tomorrow. I think I will drop the weigh-in and see how they do.
