  Subject: Red river, Louisiana

Submitted by Jeff Buchanan, Insider's Maps

Date Fished: 9/17/2008
Water Temperature: 80
Water Clarity: 6 inches

The Red River has been clearing but still not in the best of shape. The water levels are not too high, and the rain from Gustav and Ike left the water muddy in much of the main river. The main river is tough fishing when the water looks like this, but you can find some backwater areas that are clearing. . I know that the Stren Series is having a tournament soon, and if things don’t clear up (which I don’t think they will too much) the weights will be low (except for the few people that find the fish bunched up in an oxbow around some good water). If the river clears up some, fish will be caught along the river and jetties that break current. Fish are being caught right now on spinner baits, buzz baits along the blackwater flats. You’ll want to target any grass you find because the water will clear up faster in these areas. Frog fishing around lily pads and flipping any cane, bull rushes, or water lillies with tubes and jigs work great. There are also fish being caught on small chartruse and fire tiger crank baits along timber and laydowns. If you are looking just to catch limits, work small worms and finesse baits in the backwater areas along rock walls. Pay attention to current breaks where water is flowing around or through a jettie, point, or other obstruction, sometimes you can find them bunched up around current obstructions.

If you have my Red River Insider’s Map that covers both Pools 4&5, you can find clearer water in these backwater areas: # 2, 15, 22, 19, 20, 32, 47, 53, 57, and 62. It is hard to predict exactly where the clearer water will stay because so much of it depends on recent rains and how much they are or aren’t pulling. If you want more information on Insider’s Maps you can check out our website at www.insidersmaps.com or feel free to call me at (936)240-1700.

Hope the update helps,

God bless and good fishing,

Jeff Buchanan
