Water Clarity: 1 foot

Reel um N Guide Service By Lynn Atkinson 09/19/08 Sam Rayburn is at 158.87ft, the water temperature has been around 82 degrees. The water is off color from the high winds that churned up the lake, courtesy of Hurricane Ike. Ike made a mess of trees and power lines Saturday and left a lot of folks without power on Sam Rayburn. This area also lost phone service as the phone lines went tilt. Most of the power is back as well as the phones. Jackson Hill Marina has power and is ready for business. Now for the lake; it was more than a little rough out there with wind gusts up to 80 mph. The lake had some 9 and 10 feet rollers on it and looked like you were on the gulf coast looking at the surf. The water has cleared up a lot faster than you would think. There is a lot of timber that has been moved around, and I mean MOVED. Just between the 147 bridge and the Jackson Hill point there are at least 6 new patches of stumps that have showed up. A lot of Caution should be used as these stumps will be trying to find new places to rest. With the lake being down over 5.5 feet and still falling fast, there is a lot of timber above the water and lots more under it waiting to get you. Waiting for good light to get on the lake and keeping your eyes peeled for them is the safest way to do things. Remember if the water should come up look for these stumps to come loose and move again. The fishing has been pretty good with a few fish being caught over 5 lbs. The storm pushed the shallow bite back some but you should still find some that are willing to bite on Wacky worm and senko’s along with a spinner bait here and there. The deep bite has gotten a little better after the storm pushed thru. Carolina and Texas Rigs and Crankbaits have caught some fish off some of the points. Dragging a Stanley Football Jig has paid off with some good fish. I look for the bite to increase as the weather cools the water even more thru fall. Some of the bites have been very light; good line and a sensitive rod have made the difference. Check out the American Rodsmiths Team Series Rods for your Carolina and Texas Rigging Chores, it makes a big difference. I’ll be giving away “a Free trip for Fall” in the next few weeks so keep a check on the website and see if your email comes up. If you’re not signed up you need to go to the website and do so. The email address will be posted on the website and only be good for a few hours. Get all the details at the website. It could be an early Xmas Gift. We got out and caught a few Crappie over the many brush piles that we’ve put out. Some of the Crappie have been huge and the kids have had a ball catching them. Remember get the kids out fishing and have some fun. The 22 ft pontoon boat is waiting on a few more finishing touches before it’s delivered. It will be used on the larger Crappie trips. We may also be doing tours or renting the pontoon with a captain to do the driving. It will be based out of Jackson Hill Marina so look for more updates. The Bass Class on the Water is available all year long. The class provides on the water instruction on; Fishing deep Structure, Sonar and GPS, Grass Fishing, Tackle, and Many more tips. Just call for your Class Today. Big D Outdoors is the place to look for your new or used boat. Bass Cat will have a new 21 ft boat out next year. If you’re looking for a good used boat go down and check out the used boats in D. J’s lot. I know there is a good 05. 929 Nitro that still has warranty left on the engine. So, what are you waiting for? If you need some service work get down there and let them take care of it. Give them a call 409-769-3700. P.S. Check out the website for more tips. God Bless
