Water Clarity: 1 foot

Grass mats are breaking up, but plenty of bass are still utilizing this cover, and as long as the grass remains green, bass will continue to hang in the grass searching for an easy meal. We have changed our tactics with the reduction of grass. While we continue to fish grass flats, we are concentrating our efforts on areas with broken mats where we are able to use topwater baits such as the old Bagley Bang-O-Lure in blue/chrome, Smithwick Rogues in gold/black or blue/chrome, and buzzbaits with gold and white skirts. Another effective technique is to twitch a rattlin' thin fin or Bomber Speed Shad across the tops of the grass. Bass, white and yellow perch, bluegills, stripers and snakeheads all attack these baits, and our largest bass last week weighed over 5 pounds, with several others that were in the 4 pound class. In water less than 5 feet with wood or scattered grass, a Norman's Deep Tiny N in brown/orange or brown/chartreuse have caught a large number of quality bass, and one guide reports catching over 100 bass in 2 days of fishing this lure on an outgoing tide in the backs of creeks. Soft stickbaits in watermelon/gold flake, green pumpkin, or red bug produce well when bass refuse to chase baits, and a Zoom finesse worm with a 1/8 oz. weight also works well around both grass and wood.
