  Subject: Kerr, North Carolina

Submitted by Todd Ary #11460

Date Fished: 4/14/2010
Water Temperature: 67
Water Clarity: 2-3 feet

Fished Kerr for the first time ever yesterday.

I'm a transplant from Alabama now living in Greenville, NC. As an old Kentucky Lake junky I figured I would satisfy my 'bush fishing' addiction a little closer to home. I remembered some of my peers talking about Kerr back then and I always wanted to try it. It seems I always made my money with my flipping rod...guess that's why I now have tennis elbow and carpel tunnel in my left arm.

Put in at the North Nutbush rec ramp. I was immediately surprised by the clarity of the water. 3 foot visibility at least. Fished mid Nutbush for 3 hours without much action. I figured with the chilly spring the majority of the fish would still be staging. Points, secondary points, laydowns on banks between pockets type of stuff. WASTE OF TIME.

I got irritated and decided to ride a bit and look for 'the right stuff' if you know what I mean. I ran back in Flat Creek under the causeway and found a good sized pocket with tons of flooded trees/bushes. In the next 3 hours I managed 17 fish between 2 and 3 pounds pitching to light spots around the bases of the deeper flooded hardwood trunks and 4 in buck bushes(Duh, that's why I came here anyway). I was just shocked that they were so far along. I saw 8 or 10 others that hadn't committed enough yet to play with me also, all in the same pocket. All were caught on a green pumpkin tube flipped on 20 pound flouro. The clouds and wind came shortly thereafter and put an end to that so I cut out at 7.

I'm looking forward to tomorrow and Friday with the sun, heat and calm conditions...and venturing out and looking at more of the lake. I grew up on Wheeler in Alabama and it seems the fish here act much like they do there...as soon as the water hits the bushes the fish come immediately with no delay.

Great fun and I'm looking forward to learning Kerr over the next 4 years. I hear it just keeps getting better up thru June.

God Bless,

Todd Ary
