  Subject: Lake Cypress Springs, Texas

Submitted by Thad Rains (ip 205.188.195.48)

Date Fished: 3/21/1999
Here is the report for the two day Cypress Springs Coppell BASS Club Tournament. Twenty boats fished (there were two other tournaments on this East Texas lake, so about 60-70 total) the Coppell BASS Club tournament with good results. A total of 144 fish were caught (143 released, one donated to our June Kid fish event) totaling 396.75 lbs. Top honors were gained by a 17 fish wt of 58+ lbs. Individual top wts. for both days were 18.89 and 21.45 for Sat. and Sun. Same person, same rig. Jig and pig (using a plastic actually) in dark colors with black/chartreuse trailer. The second place team caught almost 40 lbs. of fish on Slugo's and jigs. Big bass for the tournament was 6.6 lbs. Not that big for this lake. The top fishermen/women (persons?) reported a very subtle bite. Nearly everything in the boat caught fish. The predominant patterns were: Jig's with pork/plastic trailers (dark colors w/chartreuse mixed in); Carolina rigged lizards/worms/craws in watermelon/ chartreuse patterns against the retaining walls; large colorado blade spinner baits fished in the shallows. Nearly everything was caught shallow. A few fish were caught in deeper water on crankbaits or lipless crankbaits. The predominant pattern seemed to be to hit the fish in the head and set the hook. Not many active fish were caught. The only top water fish that were reported were on the Slugo's. Water temps ranged from 56 to 60 deg. The water was clear to stained, with the heavy rains the region received late Friday night. Last year, the grass was poisoned, so there is a lot of dead grass around. Some new grass was found. Hopefully, the hydrilla will come back and provide some great places to fish. Some beds were found, but mostly only the smaller buck bass were located. The top team actually found some warmer water and caught most of their fish on beds. If you need any additional information about what worked or where, you can e-mail me at Thadrains@aol.com. KUDO'S AND HATS OFF TO GUIDE JEFF KIRKWOOD. HE VISITED OUR THURSDAY NIGHT MEETING AND SPOKE ABOUT DIFFERENT PATTERNS AND METHODS TO CATCH OUR FISH ON. THANKS FOR A TON OF INFORMATION JEFF. If you have interest in the Coppell BASS club, we meet at Salerno Gibbs Station in Coppell the 3rd Thursday of each month and then fish the next weekend. E-mail me if you are interested in possibly fishing with this club as a guest, or joining the club as a member. Tight lines and keep safe.
