Highlights include a record walleye catch at this years 444 tournament in Port Colborne and steady action for perch in Long Point Bay. Anglers are working hard to catch a mixed bag of walleye and rainbow trout in the central basin while the recent cold front and mayfly hatch has fish off the feed in the far west. EASTERN LAKE ERIE PORT COLBORNE - PORT MAITLAND Organizers of this past weekends 444 Fishing Tournament in Port Colborne reported steady catches of walleye coming into the weigh in station this year with an average trip producing 2 walleye. The winning team in this 2 day 8 fish total weight tournament boated a record 64+ pounds of walleye, with the largest fish just over 10 pounds. Running deep diving crank baits such as Bomber Long A’s, Hot Lips, and Riplin Redfins off of planer boards 30’-40’ down in 60-70 feet of water produced fish. At Port Maitland, anglers running worm harnesses in 70’ of water off the mouth of the Grand River boated a few walleye this week. LONG POINT BAY Good perch fishing was reported this week in the Bay. Hot spots include just east of Pottahawk Point where anglers are reporting lots of fish in 17 feet of water. Still fishing with minnows will be your best choice to tempt these fish. It looks like there will be lots of bass around for the opening of bass season this Saturday, as anglers observed abundant smallmouth sign throughout the Bay this week. Action appears to be picking up for deepwater anglers plying the waters off of the tip of Long Point. Boats trolling northwest of the lighthouse reported consistent rainbow trout catches with the odd salmon mixed in. These fish have been taken at various depths while fishing in 90’ of water. CENTRAL LAKE ERIE PORT STANLEY - PORT BURWELL - PORT GLASGOW Anglers at Port Stanley reported a mixed bag of walleye and rainbow trout in their catches this week. Boats were reporting up to 9 fish while fishing west of Port Stanley in 60-64 feet of water. Walleye were coming off of planer boards 20-30’ down whereas steelhead were taken downrigging at all depths. At Burwell boats are averaging 3 fish per trip also with a mixed bag of walleye and rainbow trout. Try east of Burwell along the “sand hills” in 57-59’ depths. Deep diving body baits such as the Bomber Long A’s in blue/silver and perch patterns trolled behind planer boards is a proven technique. Sweetening up your lure with a chunk of worm may also improve your chances of catching walleye. ERIEAU Since cold front came through last week the fishing success has tapered off at Erieau. Boats were averaging 3 fish per trip with a combination of rainbow trout and walleye in their catch. WESTERN LAKE ERIE With the mayfly hatch in full swing, walleye fishing has tapered off this week. Anglers reported tough fishing with a few walleye being taken off of Grubb’s Reef and Gate’s Point. Another producer of walleye late last week was off the West Dock of Pelee Island near the Wagon Wheel Reef where anglers were reported half limits of walleye. Try bottom bouncing with jigs, Erie Dearies, and worm harnesses. A few jumbo perch are being picked up while incidentally fishing for walleye. This week’s opener for bass season should be a good one in the West End of the lake as anglers have noted increased bass activity throughout the basin.
