LAKE ERIE FISHING REPORT (For the week of July 19, 1999; No. 6) GENERAL Although winds limited fishing in some parts of the lake, walleye fishing finally took off across most of the lake. Rainbow trout were still caught in respectable numbers and smallmouth bass fishing continued to be good. Lastly, musky is continuing to be caught around Long Point and in some spots in the western basin. EASTERN LAKE ERIE PORT COLBORNE - PORT MAITLAND Winds continued to limit offshore fishing for walleye in the Port Colborne area. Good catches of big, 9-11 lb. walleye were reported on Saturday SW of Port Maitland in 75' of water using ripplin redfins off downriggers. Smallmouth bass fishing continued to be good with bass now located in deeper, 30', of water. Phenix salt tube jigs seemed to work best. LONG POINT BAY Offshore anglers experienced great fishing at gravelly bay and the Lighthouse for rainbows and salmon all week in 60-90' of water. Fish were 37-57' down and the lures of choice were ivory/white Lyman plugs and NK 28's in silver blue and silver/purple. Some walleye were taken in the same area as well as on the South Beach. At Nanticoke there was no thermocline and the warmer waters resulted in poor fishing. In Inner Long Point Bay, smallmouth bass fishing has been very good for anglers using crayfish and salted tube jigs and drift fishing down the deep channel form EC 10 to the Outer Bay. At Bluff bar, bass fishing was spotty, if you were there when the fish were there you did very well, otherwise……Yellow perch anglers fishing with worms and minnows in front of Port Rowan and at Pottohawk Point did well at times through the week. Many small perch were released. CENTRAL LAKE ERIE PORT STANLEY - PORT BURWELL - PORT GLASGOW Fishing for walleye and salmonids was excellent this week, particularly on Saturday. Walleye, and some rainbows, were caught 5 miles west of Burwell in 47-52' of water. Deep diving body baits such as blue/silver and blueberry bubblegum hotlips and green bomber long A's and took fish. The Optimist Club Derby at Port Burwell continues through to Saturday July 24th with the current leaders being a 10.5-lb walleye and 13 pound rainbow. At Port Stanley, walleye were caught 6-7 miles SE and SW of port in 64' of water. Boats were averaging four 5-6-pounders and 2-3 rainbows apiece. Blue silver and black orange spoons were good producers here. Walleye were being caught west of Port Glasgow on hotlips. ERIEAU Anglers were frequently limiting out on rainbow trout at Erieau this week although walleye were still spotty in this part of the lake. Many rainbows in the 10-pound category were taken with a few 14 pounders as well. Fish ranged from 60-65' of water to close to shore in the vicinity 3 miles east of Erieau. Anglers flatlined hotlips with 180-200 ' of line and used blue/silver spoons off downriggers. WESTERN LAKE ERIE Walleye were hot this week throughout the western basin from the Detroit River to Point Pelee. Fish were caught by casting weight forward spinners in 34-36' of water from Union to Point Pelee and in 20' of water from Colchester to the Detroit River. Smallmouth bass fishing continued to be great all over the western basin being caught on crayfish and Venom salted and scented tube jigs (Bakies Custom Tackle Kingsville).
