  Subject: Farm 13/Stick Marsh, Florida

Submitted by Jim Poirter (ip 208.148.129.8)

Date Fished: 5/8/2000
Water Clarity: 0

The wind has been tough in the afternoons, but that is the time I usually fish. 12-20 MPH from the NE and east make the farm very rough. It also beats up the south end of the farm and makes it hard to fish. As George said, the water is way down -- nearly a foot in the past week. I though there were only 1,869,455 stumps in the SW corner of the farm. Now I know there are 1,869,456!! But, the good news is the fishing just keeps getting better. I tell everyone that the BEST fishing in Fla is when the weather is the hottest. I still think that is true, but it can be tough on the fishermen. If you wer at the farm this year, you know a lot of the grass was killed off successfully (finally). Actually, more than intended was killed and nearly all is gone on the DStick Marsh side. BUT, that is going to make some of the best fishing we have had since the early days. The newly emerging grass is coming up in certain locations underwater. Find one and you will find the baitfish congregated. Find the baitfish congregated and --- well, it means heavy schools of bass and a lot of surface activity. I have predicted this to everyone I have fished with since last Fall and it is now starting to happen. Yesterday, my wife and I took 55 bass in 2 hours, all on buzz baits. The alrgest was 6 lbs and the average was probably just under 3 lbs. A lot of quality fish. We never left an area 50 yards by 10 yards. The grass is 4 feet underwater, but we had found it earlier. This afternoon, I had Gene Stump out for a half day. We got lucky and spotted the bass busting shad in open water in all those waves. We anchored the boat and, without moving, caught 108 in 2 hours. We used just about every bait you could imagine. I believe this group of bass were actually multiple schools moving along a submerged ditch that had a submerged grass line coming up along it. If it was not multiple scools working through and around, it was the largest single school I have ever seen. The averafe fish in these was a bit larger and most went 3-4 lbs. Only 2 went between 5 and 6 lbs. At one point a school of smaller 2 lb fish must have worked by because 12 fish in a row were smaller than the rest. It si not yet too hot to fish during the day. So, if you plan to come down, come soon. Unless the wind gets you, I believe you will do great. Watch for grass on your depth finder and watch for breaking fish. Those are 2 major keys. If the wind is OK, the south end of the farm is still great. Just stay with the outer band of visible stumps, where it is still deep enough not to punch a hole in your boat. Sunny, you shoulda been there!!!
