  Subject: Farm 13/Stick Marsh, Florida

If you plan to visit the farm 13 complex over the coming weekend and/or 4th of July period, this note is for you. We have indicated that all the rain and rising water has slowed the topwater bite a bit. But, we found a way to overcome that yesterday. Basically, the bass are still in the same shallow grass areas, but appear reluctant to come up on the buzzbait and topwater plugs. We spoke to a number of anglers who were fishing the SAME areas and they were experiencing the SAME problem. We took 6 and 7 inch straight-tailed worms and rigged them Texas style, but with NO WEIGHT. We cast them across the grass and reel them SLOWLY AND STEADILY back, with just enough speed to KEEP THE WORM ON THE SURFACE. The bass will blast it hard, even if the wind is blowing!! It is important NOT to set the hook until you can feel that the fish has the worm. To do this, hold the rod at the 12 o'clock position while retrieving. This way, with the rod already high, your reflexes will not be able to set the hook and jerk the worm away if he has missed it. If he misses, keep retrieving nice and slow and he usually comes back. This was a really GOOD technique and generated strikes about every 3rd to 4th cast, sometimes faster. We recommend a 3/0 or 4/0 hook. With this retrieve, the hook size is only important in getting the maximum number of hooked fish. The worm we used was a 7 inch Zoom Trick worm, but it was the only straight tail worm we had. I did try to duplicate the response using a 7 inch ribbon tail worm (Culprit and a Riverside style). They looked good swimming across the surface, but the bass did not come on them as well. We used 3 colors of the straight tail worm - some awful looking bubblegum thing, a pumpkin seed and a green. They all worked just fine. As of the 28th, the water has come up a total of 7 inches. Still have to be careful, but you will now clear the levees in the farm when on plane, EXCEPT the corners of the intersections of the north-south and east-west canals. They have about 14 inches of water on them and will get you.
