june 8-9 sturgeon bay sturgeon bay, wisc smallmouth bass fishing trip

thanks to chris konop (pharmasea charter and guide service) for a great trip. i would highly recommended his services to anyone. very professional and a quality individual to deal with.

fish were pre-spawn. primary lures were tubes/twister tails on 1/8oz jigheads in very shallow clear water bays, anywhere from 2-10 ft depth. shallow bays with roiled/cloudy water were fished with 1/2 oz spinnerbaits. locations i remember were sawyer bay and riley's bay, there were others, but i don't remember the names (this was our first trip up there). water temps varied, 70 deg high to a low 60's in other places.

largest fish was probably a 17.5 in. with the average size being around 13in. fishing was tough the first day, dead calm water with almost no wind. second day was better with a slight chop which increased fish activity. fluke of the trip was a 24in walleye off an 8ft hump. rock bass were mixed in with the smallies. carp were spawning in one of the feeder streams. we fished the ship canal briefly for pike, casting and trolling jerkbaits, no luck there. bass were roaming the newly made beds and scouting out territories, we briefly fished for "bed" bass but quickly became bored with this strategy, it was a low % technique anyways. several private bass tournaments were being held throughout the weekend (i've never seen so many 200hp bass boats in one place in my life).

high temps in the low 80's, clear and bright sat. overcast with some sprinkles sun.

all bass were released to fight again, with one mortality due to deep gut hooking. pictures only.
