Subject: Frio River above Choke Canyon Reservoir, Texas

Well, I fished the Frio three times right around New Years and only boated a total of six whites. Granted, the fishing was done midday, from approximately noon until 3, before I was back at the Hwy. 99 launch and headed down the road to the deer lease for the evening hunt.

Brother Doug and I headed down toward Tilden with a renewed sense of optimism on MLK Day. We launched at 1 p.m. with things starting off slow. We caught a few scattered fish trolling Shad Raps or tying up and tossing Rattletraps. But other than sunburn, no steady action.

But Lady Frio finally gave it up in a big way as the day wore on.

We found a stretch that began to produce fish on every pass. We'd troll our Shad Raps through, and either one of us or both of us would hook up. And these weren't puny 11 inchers. These, my friends, were the gorilla whites that we dream about, fish up to 16 inches with plenty of belly and shoulder. We continued to make passes through the area until the trolling motor drained the battery.

Next, we tied up and began casting Rattletraps into the honey hole. It was a fish on every cast, with many hits coming right at the boat. By this time we were releasing our fish. Six o'clock was coming on strong so we cranked her up and headed back to the dock.

All told we kept 23--two shy of a one-man limit--and released 18. Forty fish, make that 40 quality fish, days don't come often--Doug and I will relish this one for quite a while.
