Submitted by Fishhead (ip 66.74.118.172)

Date Fished: 2/22/2003
Water Temperature: 56
Water Clarity: 4 feet or greater

I hit the water shortly after 7am, and noticed right off the bat that I was going to have trouble. I haven't fished the lake in 4 years, but know it well, and all my previous "hot spots" showed no promise. I had trouble graphing fish, and found it even harder to get bit. I started out crankin', even throwing the "big junk", and after 4 moves, and throwing everything I could think of, I decided to try the old go to, split shotting. It was well after 9am before I got my first bite, A 2-1/2 pounder, and the second followed about 20 minutes later. Both came on a 4" amber green variation with a #2 hook and 6# line. Another 4-1/2 hours later I managed my 3rd bite, on a blue shad colored worm, and it went a little over 3#. My 4th bite came about 30 minutes later, still split shotting a shad colored worm, and it was my best fish, by far, but I managed to shake it off at the boat, after 3 hard core jumps, and I estimated it at around 4#. I fished from 8 feet down to 40 feet, backs of coves to main lake points, and all 4 bites came in less than 20 feet of water. I only saw 6 fish hooked all day, and 4 of them were mine. As noted in other reports, the "law" was out in force, and I heard sirens all day long. The speed limit on Castaic is 35 mph and anyone 12 or under has to be wearing a life vest, it's the law. Also, I had 2 of the "green guys" from the DFG follow me up the ramp and search my boat from top to bottom. I still don't have a clue what they were looking for, but they sure seemed dissapointed when they didn't find it. I'm going to start reporting on every trip I make, which is usually twice a month, sometimes more often, and I have no reason to lie, I'm retired from tournament fishing. Set the hook and get the net!!! Next trip - - - Lake Success, 3/7/03.
