Hey, I was up at my mother's house in Old Bridge for a few days so I figured I'd give Kennedy Park a shot...for those who aren't familiar with it, it's really more of a huge pond than a lake. The water is typical Central/South Jersey...acidic and stained...often murky...I was out there this morning and it was overcast...nice change from the scorching heat...anyway casting from shore I picked up a couple of dinks and a bullhead; missed about a dozen fish that I should have had (lost one just as I was about to lip grab him, he jumped the hook right at the water's edge). Most of the hits were on Senkos, red shad color (my first week using Senkos and already I understand why people like these lures so much...the fish were smacking it constantly, even though I missed quite a few hookups). One bass was caught on a small watermelon tube, texas-rigged. The bullhead hit a Berkely power-craw, pumpkinseed color. Nice fight out of that little catfish, he wasn't even a foot in length. My understanding is that Kennedy Park Lake and the small ponds which surround it are stocked by the Dept. of fish and game...(?)I've pulled some decent bass out of there over the past year and also some really nice pickerel. There's also loads of bluegills/sunnies and some big yellow perch too...and of course, the requisite carp. Speaking of which, when I'm there at the park I occasionally fish the much smaller pond up on the hill next to the main water (the one you pass when you're leaving, right before the exit), and while I've caught mostly dink bass there, I always see at least one huge carp...and these aren't your typical bronze/gray/brown ones, these are gorgeous...whites and reds and oranges...one day I was casting from the shore and noticed what I thought was a big old orange traffic cone that someone had tossed into the water, until the cone moved and swam away. Mighty big carp. I've heard tell of larger bass in the main lake, too. Recenly a local told me that the lake is nearly 30 feet deep in the middle, but I have no idea how true that is. Anyone have any idea? If that's the case, it might be worth it to try a float tube there at least, or maybe a jon boat, because I've seen some big fish jumping near dusk, just out of reach of shore casters...
