  Subject: Diamond Valley, California

Submitted by Russell (ip 67.21.12.77)

Date Fished: 9/25/2003
Water Clarity: 0

I went to see Mike Gausti the fine gentleman and biologist that raised the fish that now inhabit diamond valley lake. He spoke at a little seminar at Bass pro west in Santa Ana. In case you wanted to know I thought I would summarize what the good man said.

This lake is very clear 10-15ft in the summer and 30-40ft in the spring. The bass usually stay just below what is visiable. So fish deep.

Unlike most lakes where you cast from your boat towards shore He suggested you fish from your boat at the shoreline out towards the main body of the lake, fishing uphill.

Swim baits work well, 4" better than 5".

Purple is the color of choice for any type of lure

If the water is calm dont even try top water. Walking the dog type baits work best poppers are ok. Buzzbaits never work he said he's only seen 2 fish caught on buzz baits He guesses its scares of the fish.

The fish are not line shy so use 8lb test min he's had fish snap 15lb line. He's caught fish with 25lb line

When you catch a fish 16 others will follow, than you can catch the ones that followed.

He called a 3lb bass a dink.

Spoons in shad bait balls work

The fish are the strongest ever, he's caught 2lbers that he swore where 7-lbs before he pulled them up

Spinners along mudlines in the spring spinners work well all year long white and chartruse are best.

Use deep diving cranks

As for trout they are deep right now. If you catch them deep they will die when you pull them up. In winter He took a rusty rooster tail and on three casts caught 3 fish upto 6lbs. There are no trout under 3 lbs. Trout look like salmon with hooked jaws.

He says the lake is slow right now only 60 fish every 4 hours. Normally 125 fish every 4 hours

Please practice catch and release

Last thing I will say is that opening day will be a zoo He expects 4,000 people.

Please practice catch and release

Hope the info helps
