I fished last week on Wed 9/17 from daylight until dark to practice for the BAIT classic on 9/19 and 9/20. On Wed., my partner and I caught 1 fish that was 13" long and managed only 3 other bites the entire day. We caught the fish on a buzzbait in the Buttahatchee region and had a couple of other bites in that area. We fished spinnerbaits, jigs, crankbaits, topwater, and brushhogs in creeks, main river, and sloughs on every possible cover with no luck. On Thurs., we managed to catch 2 fish in the area around the Eastbank ramp off the willow grass. We caught a 3# lm on a spinnerbait and a 3 1/2# lm on a blk/blue jig. On Friday, Day 1 of Classic, we went back to that area again and started out with spinnerbait and buzzbait around grass with no luck. We switched to a 10" worm in those areas and caught a 10 pound limit around the willow grass. On day 2, we returned to the area of grass we caught fish and to our disappointment someone had beat us to the area where we had caught our fish on day 1. We saw that boat catch a couple good fish over 3# from that area also on a worm. We managed 2 keepers on a 10" worm on day 2. 1st place was 25 pounds from a couple TN guys fishing in a jetboat in the Buttahatchee River. 2nd place was 20 pounds by a local MS fisherman fishing a 10" worm in a shallow slough accessible by pushpole. Congrats to both places who won a 18' Procraft w/150 Merc. plus cash. Overall, I enjoyed the tournament, but was very disappointed with the lake. I know of over 15 boats from the TN and VA division who left early and did not fish the classic due to the poor fishing and vowed to never return to the lake.
