Date Fished: 9/26/2003
Water Clarity: 4 feet or greater

Went up to the Santa Ynez River (Red Rock) this morning with Brian Kettler and his girlfriend Mindy. For the first time in 16 years we couldn't get in until sunrise which was a drag but at least they were prompt and did open the gate at sunrise. The water level was way down and not running. After a short hike to the first pool we got a few decent smallmouth on the weightless Salt Shaker Worm. The second pool we found a few more and I got a fat 15 incher. We saw quite a few nice fish in the third pool but couldn't get them to eat. Before we left I picked one up that I didn't see. After a little experimenting at the fourth pool where Brian and I each got a smallie in the 14 - 15 inch range we realized that the fish were very spooky - if you were too close or they saw you they wouldn't eat but if you could adequately hide or cast to a fish far enough away they'd go nuts over the bait. Very interesting. The fifth pool put out a few smaller bass. The sixth pool gave Brian and I each another good fish along with some smaller ones. By the time we made it up to the seventh pool it was a lot later than I usually fish and it was a bust except for the decent largemouth that swiped at Mindy's crankbait.

Other than that we got lots of Green Sunfish including some pretty decent sized ones in all of the pools. I got all but one of my fish on the 5 inch Salt Shaker Worm in Watermelonseed Red and Watermelonseed Purple rigged weightless and Texas-rigged, Mindy got most of her fish on 4 and 5 inch Salt Shaker Worms in Black Grape and Brian stuck to a small jig most of the day with a 4 inch Salt Shaker Worm trailer. All fish were released.
